National Railway Network: Demo Data

December 15, 2011

The Centre for Topographic Information - Sherbrooke (CTIS), part of the Earth Sciences Sector of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), is producing the first version of the National Railway Network (NRWN). The NRWN data provide a consistent geometric description and a set of basic attributes of rail over the entire Canadian landmass.

Most of the NRWN data are produced with the collaboration of federal, provincial/territorial and private agencies. NRWN contributors are involved in different levels of the data production process such as project funding, sharing of source data or by working on data collection and data processing.

Partner organizations are selected for their specific interests or for their capability to offer reliable, up-to-date representations of rail phenomena. Other contributors are invited to participate.

Contributors involved and participating in the creation of the first version of the NRWN are:

Federal

Transport Canada - Economic Analysis Directorate:

Transport Canada - Rail Safety Directorate:

Provincial/Territorial

Ontario:
Land Information Ontario
Saskatchewan:
Information Services Corporation
Yukon:
Government of Yukon
Northwest Territories:

Private Sector

Canadian National (CN):

Railway Association of Canada (RAC):

The NRWN data will serve as a foundation for several applications. This common geometric base will be maintained closest to the source and used by all who participate. This common infrastructure should facilitate data integration with supplementary data (geometric and attributives).

Features of the NRWN:

  • Track
  • Station
  • Marker Post
  • Structure
  • Crossing
  • Junction

For more details regarding these features refer to the following documentation.
