Updated Québec NRN data including Street Names, Place Names and Address Ranges available by the end of summer 2010
May 28, 2010
An agreement between the governments of Québec and Canada for the sharing and updating of Québec's geospatial data for the National Road Network (NRN) project has been finalized. In addition to the road network, the data to be shared includes address ranges. This data will allow for georeferencing of addresses located in all of Québec's municipal regions.
Advanced by the signing of the 2007-2012 Canadian Geomatics Accord, this agreement establishes mutually beneficial cooperation between Natural Resources Canada and the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune. The Ministère des Transports, the Ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l'Occupation du territoire, and the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune are the custodians of Québec road network and address range data. The Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune, in its role as the integrator of the geospatial data, will be responsible for coordinating the work with Natural Resources Canada.
For all the organizations involved, this cooperative agreement will result in active collaboration between the two levels of government in order to develop processes for exchanging and updating data, thereby generating sharing and exchange of expertise. This agreement will also result in more consistent data, and will encourage greater use of the government of Québec's authoritative data.
For citizens, this agreement realizes efficiencies between governments and it will generate savings through the sharing of maintenance costs for Québec road data. The agreement also supports increased accessibility to geospatial data through the GeoBase portal. This portal provides access to a shared database of quality and up-to-date geospatial information for all of Canada, without cost or restrictions.
For GeoBase users this means fresh Québec NRN data will be available this fall.
