Second update release of Ontario NRN dataset

September 11, 2008

On behalf of the Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is pleased to announce the release of a second province wide update to the Ontario portion of the National Road Network (NRN).

The release files were produced by Land Information Ontario (LIO) based on a maintenance agreement between NRCan and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources - Land Information Ontario with funding support from GeoConnections. This GeoBase NRN release is the second province wide update for this dataset and contains more than 9800 km's of new roads. Under this agreement the GeoBase dataset does not include street names or street range addresses.

LIO maintains a provincial road dataset called the Ontario Road Network (ORN) which is comprised of more than 202,000 kms of roads with a positional accuracy of 10 metres or less and from which the NRN information is extracted. The ORN is road dataset containing attribute information including street names, street addresses, road classification, road surface type, direction of flow and speed limits. The ORN is considered the authoritative source of roads data for the Ontario Public Service under the Government Information Technology Standard, GO-ITS 29.

LIO has invested heavily in building business and technical models to efficiently maintain the Ontario Road Network data. This business model brings together data from the three government bodies with a legislative responsibility for roads in the province. These road authorities are: Municipalities across Ontario, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and other road authorities. Users can access the ORN dataset by contacting LIO at lio@ontario.ca.

Data Change Management (DCM) files between 2008-09 and previous 2007-10 releases are also provided for this dataset.
