GeoBase's National Hydro Network expands to northern Ontario
April 2, 2008
Two agreements signed recently will bring Ontario's far northern regions into the GeoBase National Hydro Network (NHN).
In the first agreement, the updating of the topographic base will enable the completion this year of 23 NHN drainage areas in the Ontario Far North region using the National Topographic Database. However, before drainage areas in the Hudson Bay Lowlands region can also become part of the NHN, similar base topographical data must be prepared. This second project will be completed by March, 2011 resulting in an additional 22 NHN drainage areas to provide complete coverage of Northern Ontario.
The two agreements feature cost-sharing arrangements with Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources, GeoConnections, and the Earth Sciences Sector's contribution to the GeoBase program of NRCan.
The datasets for the two Ontario regions will join data for other parts of the country, now available without cost or restrictions and under common licensing terms, under the Data tab at this Web site.
GeoBase is a federal, provincial and territorial government initiative that is overseen by the Canadian Council on Geomatics. As part of the Earth Sciences Sector's contribution to GeoBase, Natural Resources Canada's Centre for Topographic Information in Sherbrooke produces, manages and distributes NHN data.
